Gizmo Customization

Gizmo and his Evil offspring have been in my heart since I was a little-un and I’ve always wanted a set of props replicas of them. Teased before the pandemic, then available for pre-order years later, and finally—after what felt like an eternity—I got my hands on Trick or Treat Studios’ Gremlins 2 Mogwai prop replicas!

As a huge Gremlins fan, I’ve always loved both Chris Walas’ original designs and Rick Baker’s Gremlins 2 designs for different reasons. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve wanted convincing replicas of the G2 Mogwai, and the ones I was most excited for were George and Lenny. They’ve been largely overlooked in merchandising, so finally seeing them get the spotlight is awesome.

First Impressions

Overall, I was seriously impressed with these replicas—especially for the price point. They absolutely nailed George. He looks fantastic, and seeing him alongside Lenny is amazing (they were my favorites growing up).

But, surprisingly… Gizmo felt a little off.

I mean… he’s cute…but….off. I’m not sure why they didn’t get him quite right—he’s the poster boy, after all! It’s not one major issue, but rather a lot of little details that make him feel less accurate than the others. he should look a little more:

So, naturally, I did what I do best… geeked out, grabbed my tools, and gave him a full custom makeover!

The Gizmo Customization Process

To transform Gizmo into a more screen-accurate replica, I did the following:

Stripped & Prepped

  • Completely removed all existing fur
  • Took the figure apart and cleaned all exposed areas with IPA (isopropyl alcohol)
  • dremmeled and scraped away all the glue

Resculpting & Modifications

  • Masked the eyes and resculpted the eyelids with Milliput
  • Strengthened the base of the ears
  • Gently heated and reshaped the ears to be more curved, as they should be
  • Cut away sections of body foam to improve articulation and poseability
  • Added and sculpted foam to reshape his rounder belly, as seen in Gremlins 2
  • Refined the overall form

Painting & Fur Work

  • Fully repainted his face and body for a more realistic flesh tone with subtle veining
  • Patterned, sewed, and applied an entirely new custom fur skin
  • Used a mix of premium furs (some hand-dyed) in varying lengths for realism
  • Trimmed and styled the fur for a more accurate look

Final Touches

  • Reassembled and secured all parts
  • Deep-glazed the eyes multiple times for a more glassy, wet appearance
  • Added custom eyelashes for extra detail

The Final Result

And boom—Gizmo now looks far more accurate! It was quite a bit of work, but absolutely worth it.

What do you think of the transformation?
